Posted by Woebot at December 11, 2003 10:11 AMhear hear on the Prefuse 73 and Four Tet, god are you EVAH hear hear!
i also myself can't quite feel what i've heard of Pitman, despite Marcello's eloquent (if a little too agressive, IIRC; to be fair, i suppose he thinks he will be forgotten in the Dizzee rush) testifying for him.
you *and* SR on the Luomo tip!
Posted by: scott at December 11, 2003 10:28 AMActually I wouldn't be best chuffed with getting either the Kylie or Timberlake LPs for Xmas.
I liked the first Pitman 7" a lot, and was eager as hell for the LP to stand up. John Cooper Clarke and a fondness for comedy records being decisive factors, but it's just a very dull listen.
Something else that should probably be in that list, all basically good stuff, is The Manitoba LP except it's been SO off my radar.
Grime CDs will be in the post for Xmas. BUT NOBODY IS ALLOWED TO FILESHARE THEM. Even toying with doing the selection as a C90. Some folks NEED to get paid.
Posted by: Matt at December 11, 2003 12:00 PMi'd love to get tape or CD me...hehheh, if that's not too cheeky, i won't be filesharing anything.
on another note, i also agree about Manitoba.
see Jon Dale for more on this matter.
Posted by: scott at December 11, 2003 12:20 PMyeah, has to be tape, cdrs are blatantly shit, i don't understand why anyone does that, they don't even work unless you own £1000 pound audio equipment, otherwise they just skip and skip and skip. tape is the way to compile garage no question.
Posted by: luke at December 11, 2003 12:40 PMMe luv Prefuse 73. Mandatory purchase imho
Posted by: nick at December 11, 2003 05:15 PMI can tape you the Four-Tet - I got it for my birthday ;-) (so, in agreement!)
Posted by: John Eden at December 11, 2003 09:56 PMThis is working out fantastically! Soon I'll have a copy of every record I considered buying before pausing and worrying about my ultra-hip credentials...
Posted by: Matt at December 11, 2003 10:06 PMI love the Villalobos and (dare I whisper it) Four Tet, and of course Justin (which came out last year anyway), but yeah I agree on the rest, except MAYBE Luomo...I keep falling in and out of love with that one. (Well actually I've just bought the Herbert LP but I haven't listened to it yet.)
Posted by: Angus at December 12, 2003 03:19 AMI was gagging to get hold of the Villalobos record, thinking this was the record that was going to sell Microhouse to me, but I didn't really like it. Its quite "subtle" innit.
As it turned out the Michael Mayer mix did the business on the Click Disco front, that is awesome, and I'd say the near perfect christmas present!
I've been burnt thrice with Outkast, I got Aquemini, Atliens and Stankonia and didnt really rate any of them. The Rapture I heard and failed to set me alight. The Herbert I heard (eventually) and thought it was a bit pompous and dull. The White Stripes I've only ever heard one half-decent track by (monstrously hyped). Sean Paul is OK (I've toned down my antagonism a bit) but Ragga is for 12"s and 7"s innit. The Neptunes have suffered from Pharrell falling in love with himself, one (Milkshake) or two (Beautiful) decent things this year only. Prefuse 73, I had a comp of similar stuff on Chocolate Industries last year (or was it 2001) that I gradually came to loathe. I heard Uprock Studies and it was alright, not my cup o' tea. I would like to check the Jaxx LP but I've been warned off by the terrible naff artwork (I adored the graphics on the last one which surpasses their debut in my 'umble estimation) and Reynolds description of it as being "overegged". Four Tet I have a blindspot for, maybe they appear more interesting abroad?
Kylie and Justin just plain suck :-)
Posted by: Matt at December 12, 2003 09:30 AMSean Paul is the Man of The Year, you fool! :-)
Posted by: John Eden at December 12, 2003 10:54 AMVillalobos is kinda crap except for "Dexter" which is a total tune, nice melody and a monstrous bass(though that's not what makes the track).
I wouldn't get the Basement Jaxx one either but I don't even like pop music.
Eden, I thought you were man of the year ;-)
Posted by: matt at December 12, 2003 03:54 PMI have the Marks & Spencers vouchers to prove it as well... ;-)
