In The Skip*2

Goldfrapp on the other hand I've never even half tolerated.

In case people haven't noticed they're not pure pop fun along the lines of Girls Aloud or Rachel Stevens. They're archetypal Observer Music Monthly fodder (see Mud Hut Woman). They started out working the post-Tricky John Barry thing, and seeing as that didn't quite pan out, converted to Hoxton Art Disco with just that littlest bit of extra irony to make sure sure you understood they weren't in fact making functional dance music, that you could reliably invest money in their album and play it at dinner parties.

"Ride a White Horse" is a travesty because they're trying to glorify the entirely crap activity of taking cocaine and (perhaps more crucially) because they are who they are, they come over like Marks and Spencers.

Ah, thank God for that, Matt...I was starting to think I was the only person on the planet who didn't like them. In the end I got bored slagging them off because it felt like I was shouting down a well sometimes:(http://kidshirt.blogspot.com/2004/06/goldfrappppppppppppp.html)

Normally sensible people seem to go all gooey about them ("Aww, it's just a bit of fun, innit. You need to lighten up...")

Boycott 'em and buy a Rah Band compilation, I say. Or something by Kenny.

Hopefully, this'll kick off the backlash good'n proper...

Knew Kek would be in like Flynn... I can't disagree with anything there except I can't get past the fact that when she was collaborating with Orbital, Tricky etc she could cause genuine flutters... then again, you wouldn't want Bez to push out on his own either (actually, maybe you would...). Oh, adn Ride a White Horse was about cocaine? Damn! I thought it was about a Pre-Raphaelite painting... these dirty discotasts!

YES!

goldfrap = total shit.

i'm so glad others feel the same way.

it all seems so cynical, the shift from listless trip-hop coffee table sludge to one-trick 'glamourous' neo-Glitter stomp.

but more than that, what's truely awful about them is that despite trying to be so seductive and femme fatale-ish, she always comes across as a bit mumsy, like those middle aged, mother-of-two middle-managers you see dressed to impress on those Channel 5 'documentaries' about swingers.

errr, other people watch those too, right?

Definitely something a bit empty there, and I'm a sucker for that shuffling glam beat in theory. I hear it's all Milli Vanilli styles live too...

love that DFA remix though...

"love that DFA remix though..."

I'll def. be having words w/ Tim about that, next time I see him...

While I fully agree that the new record is complete crap, I take exception to your distaste for Goldfrapp's first and second records. Felt Mountain was very lush - Pilots, in particular - and Black Cherry had some big glam flavor - Train never fails to stir my loins. They've been touring pretty steady for the past several years and even released a live DVD which testifies to the fact they do play LIVE. I saw them and it was pretty exceptional. And her vocals on Orbital's tracks are pure aural bliss. Girls Aloud is every bit as deserving of shame as Supernature. I really wish she'd ditch the thinking man's Madonna schtick. The Tiefschwarz remix of Ooh La la is pretty hot too - I love how they focused on the line "I'll never walk again." Pervy perfection!

Pete, it's a free country.

Dear Woebot,

My words weren't meant as an insult. I was just trying to set up my point. Sorry if my grammar was off and offended you - no offense intended. I love reading your blog and just wanted to contribute my say. Open mouth, insert foot.

Pete
